Hi friends and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!

Today for episode 51 of Cracked I’m joined by Ellen Van Dijk . She’s a stained glass artist based in The Netherlands best known for her  photo realistic portraits. Drawing and painting portraits since childhood, her love for drawing and the desire for creative expression has been present for as long as she can remember. The combination of portraiture and learning to make stained glass windows brought her to where she is today. Today we’re talking about her personal experience with heartfelt portrait commissions, travel adventures of teaching, her in person classes as well as her online classes, and a couple really great glass paining glass hacks! To see more of Ellen's work, her instagram is  @glasatelierellen  and her website is glasatelierellen.com.

CRACKED EP. 50 To Be or Not to Be, That is David's Question with David Scheid

Today on Cracked I'm joined by LA artist David Scheid. David is a stained glass artist whose work is inspired by the light and landscapes of California. He spends most of my time on the road as a tour manager for bands  including Girl Talk, Beirut, and Dinosaur Jr.  and when at home he builds colorful, geometric stained glass pieces and custom windows. His work has been installed in houses, gardens and shops throughout the West Coast and greater United States.
Today we’re going to discuss the eternal question of what it is we’re meant to be doing professionally, an honest look at what working during the pandemic looked like and finding extraordinary inspiration and imagery in the everyday moments around us.
To see more of David’s work is Instagram is @davidscheidstainedglass and his website is davidscheidstainedglass.com.
For the Cracked Patreon page members, David has made us a studio playlist, made up of all the artists that he has tour managed for. The link to that is always at the bottom of the show notes!

CRACKED EP. 47 Booty Bounce with Kyle Hubbs of Booty Glass Girls

Today we’re talking BBLs, BBGs Bounce Clubs, Baddies and so so much more today with New Orleans artist Booty Glass Girls artist Kyle Hubbs. Kyle is a self-taught stained glass maker who began his work with glass in 2014. After several years of experimenting with more traditional and geometric work, as a native of south Louisiana he looked no further than his own New Orleans for inspiration for his current and modern expression of glass. He credits the exuberance, attitude, style and self-confidence of young people in his local bounce clubs as the muses for his work.

Bounce is a style of music that originated in New Orlean's bars and local nightclub scene and block parties during the late 1980s and early 90s. Using a call-and-response  style of flow inspired by the Mardi Gras chants that were common in New Orleans brass bands. It brought a new life to New Orleans’ own brand of Louisiana hip-hop and continues today to grow in popularity and be nationally recognized in current songs like Beyoncé’s “Get Me Bodied," Rihanna’s “Pour it Up" and Drake’s “Nice for What.”

There’s been a bit of controversy around Kyle because he's a male and coming into today, //many of us thought he was a female. //With that came assumptions and projected intentions and narratives around of his work. Then once listeners realized he was a man, really strong opinions about cultural crossover, exploitation and appropriation began to fill my DMs.

I wanted to give Kyle a platform to speak on all of it, and he knew what he was walking into. So Kyle, thank you for showing up. And for you the listener, I ask that you hold your judgement til you listen to my talk with Kyle in it’s entirety.

Duality in art is so important. Art that inspires conflict within us is important. Whether it's violent but also beautiful or full of both sorrow and joy. These are the conversation starters. right? And these conversations are often the ones that can spark growth.

The core mission of this podcast is about celebrating stained glass art, and my love for the work of Booty Glass Girls is unwavering. Despite all my questions,  there's no question in my mind that the cross pollination of this contemporary culture and stained glass is still a smash hit. All right let’s get into it…

Join me as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Kyle’s work, his instagram is @bootyglassgirls.

For the Patreon page, Kyle is gifting a print made on high quality cotton rag paper signed and numbered. It’s 20”x16” and they retail for $150. I’ll be doing a drawing for that 12 days after this episode is released.

CRACKED EP. 46 Baking Business Pie with Erin Glassworks

Today on the 45th episode of Cracked I'm joined by artist Erin from Erin Glassworks. Her work is inspired by nature,  with a focus on her local Florida wildlife. When she's not translating the natural world into a  glass design she's building community and educating other artists and small business owners through her social media. Today Erin and I are going through how she's running things down in Largo Florida, exactly how and where she's making her profit, the art of Patreon,  ways she's minimizing her impact on the environment through her packaging and how she's found - atleast in my opinion - the most organic and thoughtful way to create an online stained glass community.

Today for episode 44 of Cracked I'm joined by Jacob Hinnenkamp, the son 1/2 of  Cincinnati's father and son duo Hinnenkamp Glass Crafters. As a young adult he took on the craft himself and in late 2017 he finally decided to take the hobby to the next level and start marketing his work, creating a business making custom pieces. Today Jacob and are are going to discuss his personal designs as well as  his experience as being a licensed artist for the Charley Harper Studio, his take on inside angle cuts and his future of designing official Charley Harper patterns.

CRACKED EP. 43 Unified Design In Mind with Jack Brindley of Pavilion Pavilion

Today on Cracked I'm joined by Edinburgh artist Jack Brindley. Under the alias Pavilion Pavilion, Jack has been exploring the relationship between contemporary art and objects of use, combining his research as an artist and his interest in design and architecture. Each work is a unique and individually commissioned piece, looking at forms found in minimalism and ‘painterly hard line abstraction’. The aim is to create works that are contemporary whilst adhering to the traditional methods and materials. How should Contemporary Stained Glass sit between an artwork and an architectural embellishment?

Stained Glass by Pavilion Pavilion is influenced by moments such as the groundbreaking Bauhaus School, where Design, Architecture, Craft and Art were all at the forefront of innovation. Today we discuss his idea art as a place holder, finding focus in his craft, enhancing what is already present and how maybe having all the glass tools and resources at your fingertips may not be the best thing after all. Let's get into it...

Join me as I crack it all wide open!

CRACKED EP. 42 Manila Roots, New York Fruits with Sacha Carlos-Raps

Welcome baaaaa-aaack! It's Season 4 of Cracked!!! Today to kick it off I'm joined by Brooklyn based glass artist Sacha Carlos-Raps! She is a Filipina immigrant and not only makes beautiful glass work full of bright colors but also does printmaking and illustrations. Her art practice is "her rebellious demonstration against the good immigrant binary and the post-diasporic expectations of “first gens” Her work is memoriric totems that embraces the kaleidoscopic inner self, an ode to the abode and the absurd."
Today we talk glasswork of course but we're also going to talk about markets, candles, get into the making of her zine, her Oaxacan residency and then we wind it back down with some fun Phillipino facts.
Let's get into it...

CRACKED EP. 41 Take the 90 to The 405 to The 101 to The 2 with Jax Partlow

Hellooooo and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!
Today’s guest is Jax Partlow.
Jax Partlow is a glass artist based in Los Angeles. While formally trained in graphic design, Jax prefers the longevity and physical aspects that glasswork affords her, as well as a very tangible connection with her late father. It was only after she was left his tools that she gravitated toward the craft while living in Hungary. Thoughtful, romantic and functional, stained glass fulfills a creative desire for Jax as an artist, while meeting her designer side with its utilitarian appeal. She is most recognized for her Public Piece Project in which she installs her art in unlikely spaces. It’s my favorite. It’s so smart and cool and she’s my absolute favorite street artist.
Jax’s work has been featured in Stained Glass Magazine, The Corning Museum of Glass: New Glass Review 2022 and by her own accord in the streets of Los Angeles.
Let’s get into it….

CRACKED EP. 40 From The Outback to The Alps with Nadine Keegan and Tom Medicus

Hello hello and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss! Today’s guests are the dynamic duo Nadine Keegan and Tom Medicus. I was able to catch them both at the same time while Nadine is visiting Tom’s studio in Austria. Although their work is strikingly different, they both have done a brilliant job bringing meaningful topics and statements into their work. Keep listening and you’ll agree!

Join me as I crack it all wide open.

A bit about Nadine:

After spending 3 years studying fine art photography at RMIT and PIC, Nadine became disillusioned with the orthodox methods of image making and work style of a fine art photographer. A few years past and many less artistic pursuits were explored when, with a visit to the solar-punk stained glass mural Cosmovitrial in Toluca, Mexico, she finally discovered the creative industry which aligned with her ideals. While realizing the potential that exists within the craft that she had not yet seen in Australia. Solidifying her obsession with research into the stained glass window's development through the 20th century, with the manifestations of the Arts and Crafts anti-industrialisation ideals embedded in it's design and construction. Being first self-taught, her unfettered and enthusiastic approach to the medium garnered both a healthy commission workload and part time work with a nationally-renowned stained glass studio. Through her work, Nadine celebrates both the legacy of the craft laid out before her and the potential of the materials when manipulated with a contemporary perspective and up-to-date technology. The limitless possibilities of the medium will provide a lifetime of exploration for her. While commissions allow her to explore themes and genres she may not otherwise, her own artistic pursuit consistently comes back to the theme of Australian identity. The idiosyncrasies of our natural world and our relationship to it and eachother. Being an eternal optimist her work is always world affirming while making a case for the necessary conscious development of both our inner and outer worlds. Her experience includes custom stained glass fabrication, heritage restoration, architectural glass work and exhibition works. To see more of Nadine’s work, her instagram is @nadinekeegan and her website is nadinekeegan.com.

Now a bit about Tom:

Thomas Medicus is a visual artist based in Innsbruck, Austria. Best known for his anamorphic cubes he also works in other fields such as illustration, animation, digital art, stained glass, restoration and conservation as well as public art. He studied social work at MCI Innsbruck before attending the Glasfachschule Kramsach, a school for glass art, where he earned a master glaziers degree later. In addition to his independent activity as a freelance artist, he was employed in the long-standing firm for stained glass windows Tiroler Glasmalerei for seven years. From the beginning of 2021 he became completely independent and founded his company Studio Medicus. To see more of Tom’s work, his instagram is @tomedicus and his website is thomasmedicus.at.

CRACKED EP. 39 Tokens, Talismans and Traditions of The Countryside with Jane Littlefield

Hello hello and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss! My guest today is Jane Littlefield. Jane works with stained glass from her workshop in Great Longstone, Derbyshire.  She studied Fine Art at Ravensbourne College and has worked in different areas of design over the years.  Jane works to commission and has produced work for homes, schools and businesses.  She also runs glass workshops. Her own work consists of stained glass panels that have multi – layered, painted glass images that are inspired by the Peak District, its nature, history and folklore. "I use images of creatures, landscape features and organic motifs to create these glass panels."  The glass is hand painted using traditional stained glass paints and translucent enamels, often using many layers and textures, that are fired in the kiln.  They are assembled using lead and solder.
 Let’s get into it…

Today’s episode is with Ariana Makau of Nzilani Glass. She is the second person in the world – and the first woman – to receive a Master’s Degree in Stained Glass Conservation from the Royal College of Art in London. Equally comfortable on a job site, at a board meeting or in a museum, Makau has over 25 years of experience with art and architectural preservation.  She is a Board Member and Health and Safety Chair of the Stained Glass Association of America and is a Fellow of AIC. Before she started Nzilani, she worked at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, London’s V&A Museum, and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Makau’s presentations at national conferences bridge the gap between health & safety regulators and those involved in stained-glass. Approachable and non-judgmental, Ariana enjoys sharing her professional experience in classroom and public talks. Highlights include a better awareness of personal safety combined with a deeper appreciation of the art form.

I could have spoken to Ariana for 2 more hours and still only scratched the surface of her extensive experience and knowledge of glass conservation and preservation. One thing I intended to ask her about but we simply ran out of time was her own work which is incredible too. If you have time please check that out as well, it’s another layer of her craftsmanship and artistry I really appreciate. To see more of that and so much more her instagram is @nzilani_glass and her website is nzilaniglass.com.

Honorable mentions from this episode:

Asbestos testing /Respirator fit tests-
Ariana recommends you do a local search with the key words "asbestos material testing company" and "respirator fit tests".  In some cases, people might be able to get the latter sourced through a museum.  Local paint companies sometimes teach one day lead certification classes as well.

"Nzilani is hoping to roll out hosting contracted respirator fit and BLL testing next year as a service to local artists. I encourage individual artists to network and do the same in their areas. Joining together can reduce costs, build community and empower folks to be accountable to their own health and well-being."

CRACKED EP. 37 Miss Piggy, Cup Noodle and the future of AI collabs with Sara Strickler

WOWOWOW welcome to 2023!

Shout out to all my hobbyists listening, this episode is for you because not all artists need to sell what they make and honestly the hobbyists make up the majority of my listeners so I was stoked to have that conversation represented here too.

Sara Strickler is today’s guest and she is from Virginia, but currently lives on a small island called Alameda in the Bay Area and works by day as a designer for Nest. In her free time she’s an incredible stained glass artist. She’s actually one of the many great talents coming out of Dan Grimaldi’s shop in San Francisco called Cradle of the Sun.

Truth be told I had a really hard time naming this episode because we cover everything from her love and appreciation for Cup Noodle, the meaning of being a hobbyist and even Miss Piggie at a rave in Berlin in 1992. Or as a yogi cult guru. Wait what? You’ll have to keep listening to find out what I mean…

Join me as I crack it all wide open!!

For the Patreon members Sara has generated another custom pattern just for us so we can all partake in an AI collaboration! We are so excited to see all of your interpretations so please please tag us in your finished products.

CRACKED EP. 36 School's Out with Nik Sanders of Hepzibar Button

Hello and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!

Today’s very sweet and lovely guest is Nik Sanders of Hepzibar Button. Her botanical Scandinavian inspired leaded glass work also incorporates very detailed glass painting. Like many of us, stained glass is something she came too after having children and a whole other long career. Before she was a full time glass artist, for over fifteen years she was a Primary School Teacher. Now Nik has been doing glass for over ten years now with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Nik’s work is personally one of my favorites - definitely on my top 10 list - and I’m so glad I got to meet the sweet woman behind the glass.

Let's get into it :)
Join me as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Nik’s work, her instagram is @hepzibarbutton.

For our Cracked Patreon page members, Nik is giving away one of her Painted bird sun catchers in a surprise color! It’s going to look so gorgeous hanging in someone’s window and I’ll be doing a drawing for that piece on my instagram on January 8th, 2023. After I do these drawings I always reach out to the winner personally as well to let them know, so don’t worry if you miss it but if you remember to, I would turn on your notifications for my instagram stories! @runaglassworks

CRACKED EP. 35 The Savage Mind of the Bricoleur with Timo Fahler

Hello all and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!
Today’s guest is Los Angeles artist Timo Fahler.
Timo uses plaster, ceramics, steel, wood, and found objects to construct highly visual and culturally significant works. Combining formal elements of sculpture with references to his heritage, Fahler’s work explores ideas of use and reuse through casting and manipulating found objects and combining them with relics that relate to personal experiences. His restructuring of objects in a manner that indicates function and meaning while remaining abstract in form, invokes a bricoleurian practice, representative of a multi-cultural aesthetic.
Alright let’s get into it with Timo…
Join me, as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Timo’s work, his instagram Is @team-oh and his website is timofahlerarchive.com.

For the Cracked Patreon page members Timo is offering a downloadable pdf of one of the patterns he used for a glass piece that’s in a show that just opened in New York Dec 10th.

CRACKED EP. 34 Team Kerbi with Kerbi Urbanowski

Hello friends and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!

Now I’ve got my eyes on a lot of glass artists and I’ve seen a lot of really cool ideas and unique projects but it’s rare that I find an artist who every time I check in on their social media and they can surprise me with something different. Kerbi Urbanowski is her name, and if that sounds familiar it’s because she was nominated by Jaclyn Miller of Assembly Glassworks and she just finished up a joint show with Ben Houtkamp of Ben’s Website. They’re team Kerbi, I’m team Kerbi and after you hear today’s episode you’ll be team Kerbi too!

All right let’s get into it…
Join me as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Kerbi’s work, her instagram is @kerbi_kerbi and her website is kerbiurbanowski.com.

For the Cracked Patreon page members Kerbi has made a studio playlist that I’ve had access to for a few weeks and it is bringing so much happiness to my workspace and I know it’ll do the same for yours! The link to that was posted there @ patreon.com/runaglassworks today, and she’s also gifting one of her Lil Rita soap dishes to one lucky member. I’ll be doing a drawing for that in my instagram stories on Dec 25th 2022. That’s 12 days after this episode is released which is when I have been doing all my drawings this season and this time it landed on Christmas!

CRACKED EP. 33 Fast Pitch with Josephine A. Geiger.

Hello and welcome back to Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!
Trained as an architect, Josephine A. Geiger’s glass art is inspired by hidden depths in the landscape. These scenes are distilled into a bold palette of rectangles and squares of colored light as she translates a photo or sketch with an Impressionistic eye, capturing the essence of the subject. Josephine’s process is organically linear, adding, shifting, flipping, or removing glass elements until the visual puzzle is finally solved — often in surprising ways.
In addition to a steady stream of private commissions (even a chicken coop), Josephine's artwork is represented in various installations and public collections. Josephine also recently created and installed an original skylight on the Frank Lloyd Wright Lovness Estate in Minnesota. Her distinctive style has earned multiple awards and has been featured in both regional and national print publications, as well as TV episodes on TPT’s MN Original and INSP’s Handcrafted America.

Join me as I crack it all wide open!

To see more of Josephine’s work, her instagram is @jageigerstudio and her website is jageigerstudio.com.

For the Cracked Patreon page members she is giving away a fused Holiday ornament as well as one of her new 2023 Calendars.  I’ll be doing a drawing for that on Dec 18th, 2022 which is 12 days after this episode is released.  Your name is automatically entered into these artist giveaways when you join for as little as $5 per month. Find out more at Patreon.com/runaglassworks

Honorable mentions from this episode:

From Josephine:
PotekGlass – The Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul area) had BOTH main stained glass supply locations close the first quarter of this year. Malcom Potek had been stepping into the fused glass retailer space the year before, but ended up hiring on the restoration specialist from one closed location and has started stocking stained glass supplies (in the physical store). He is also a fabulous artist and teacher.

CRACKED EP. 32 Two Roses And A Thorn with Ben Houtkamp of Ben's Website

For today’s episode of Cracked I had the pleasure of speaking with Chicago artist Ben Houtkamp of Ben’s Website.

Ben has one of the most recognizable styles I have seen to date. His brightly colored pieces are reminiscent of childhood nostalgia, video games and puzzles. His work is happy. and we all need more happy. I’m a Big Ben fan and I think you will be too.

To see more of Ben’s work, his instagram is @bens.website and his website is benswebsite.net.

For all the Patreon page members Ben has a discount code for 40% off everything in his online shop, this includes merchandise as well as his glasswork. and for 3 lucky Patreon members he’s sending a wine tote. They’re so cute, they come in two different color choices and they each hold 2 bottles of wine.  I’ll be doing a drawing in my instagram stories on December 11th 2022.
