CRACKED EP. 20 WHO MADE ALL THIS STUFF?!! with Judith Schaechter

Today in episode 20 we’re taking a real meander with glass artist Judith Schaechter.

With a glass career that spans 40 years, Judith is one of the most celebrated and decorated glass artists of our time and a force to be reckoned with.

Here’s just a taste of what I mean, and mind you this is not a complete list.

She is the recipient of many grants, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Crafts , The Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, The Joan Mitchell Award, two Pennsylvania Council of the Arts awards, The Pew Fellowship in the Arts and a Leeway Foundation grant.

Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Hermitage in Russia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and numerous other public and private collections.

Judith has taught workshops at numerous venues, including the Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, the Penland School of Crafts, Toyama Institute of Glass (Toyama, Japan), Australia National University in Canberra Australia.

She has taught courses at Rhode Island School of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, the New York Academy of Art and at The University of the Arts, where she is ranked as an Adjunct Professor.

Judith’s work was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial, a collateral exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2012 and she is a 2008 USA Artists Rockefeller Fellow. In 2013 Judith was inducted to the American Craft Council College of Fellows.

She’s a LEGEND.

Today she’s got some incredible resources to share with us for anyone wanting to get into the elusive gallery world and we dig into her very unique glass process. But she also shares with us some sweet little peeks into who she is outside of her work.

Her enthusiasms for pigeons, who her favorite Beatle and why vacation is a 4 letter word. Judith is not only someone who’s work I admire, but now I know that she’s also the quirky aunt I’ve always wanted. Actually even more than that, the one we all really need. You’ll see what I mean!

Join me as I crack it all wide open!

CRACKED EP. 19 Lekker! Recipes for the infinite with Anika Van Der Merwe

Hey hey welcome to episode 19 of Season 2 of Cracked with Chevonne Ariss!

Today, I’m speaking with Anika Van Der Merwe who’s joining us from Cape Town, South Africa. Traditional or Classical to homes or workplaces, her studio Silverstain Glass is bringing glass beauty into the world with a range of techniques.

Anika has that great freedom of expression in stained glass that I admire so much. Because of her limited access to materials early on, she learned to mix and match techniques to get the products unavailable to her, like creating her own flash glass. Anika’s work is an extrordinary medley of layering enamels, silverstain, matting, etching, slumping…she explains to us today how anything is possible and there really is no limitation to what you can do with a kiln and paints. But what’s her one rule about temperature?

Keep listening to find out!

CRACKED EP. 18 Southern charmed by and with Amber Droste of Soda, Ash and Sand

Hi hello hello and we're back!!!

To kick Season 2 off, I'm interviewing Amber Droste. She is a classically trained painter with a BFA in Painting and Art History from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and a Masters Degree in Painting from Washington University in St. Louis. She spent a year abroad studying painting and fresco restoration at the Art Institute of Florence in Florence, Italy.  Though her formal education was spent studying painting and art history, she has spent the greater part of the last decade focusing mainly on stained glass. She’s now working and living in  Chattanooga, Tennessee designing, fabricating, and installing leaded stained glass mostly on a larger scale, mostly commission based. Today we’re going to chat about how she presents her proposed designs to her clients, what are the qualities in other stained glass artists that she admires the most, why she’s not apologizing for her prices anymore and why you shouldn’t either!
Also, what’s Amber’s  advice for a new stained glass artists just starting out?

Here we go…

CRACKED EP. 16 A deep dive through The Round Window with Flora Jamieson

In episode 16 I'm joined by Flora Jamieson of The Round Window. Flora is a stained glass artist who takes on a wide variety of stained glass commissions as well as her own contemporary designs.
Her personal style is inspired by graphic design, the natural world, organic forms and geometric patterns. Color palettes are bold yet simple, lead lines are meticulous and purposeful and patterns are hand-painted and repetitive, with the fluidity and texture of the brush stroke telling part of the story.

Flora is also a freelance glass painter for stained glass studios in the UK and further abroad. Specializing  in reproduction of Victorian Bird Roundels, she seeks to be as faithful to the traditional techniques as possible, having studied many beautiful original examples over the past 18 years.  She has  worked on several church windows in conjunction with other stained glass studios, painting replicas of damaged pieces.

Today Flora is  is getting technical for all of us who want to know the details of her glass painting wizardry and even has some book suggestions  - the same ones she used to learn actually - for those of us that don’t have access to an in-person glass painting class. We’ll also take a dive into her double life as an avid outdoor swimmer and author of her book Wild Swimming.

And where does Studio Ghibli fit into it all?

Join me to find out…as I crack it all wide open!

CRACKED EP. 15 Dicro dreaming with Coloradifornian Meggy Wilm of Colorado Glassworks

Today I'm joined by Meggy Wilm of Colorado Glassworks!
This Californian turned Coloradan turned Californian and now back to Colorado has a business mind and an artist's heart. When not hustling at her day job brokering movie promotions for Warner Brothers, this dicro glass queen has her eyes set on carving her own unique glass paved career path. We'll chat all about finding and managing product and brand sponsorships,  the challenges of moving all your glass across the country,  her experience making custom rondels and glass sheets with Tyler Kimball of Monarch Glass, and what we can expect to see from Colorado Glassworks next.

Just don't ask her to press any more flowers...

FYI... we jump right into this one and there's no real lead-in, so just in case it's confusing, we're talking about her trip Monarch Glass in  Kansas City right out of the gates.

CRACKED EP. 14 Protect ya neck! Trademark and Copyright Q&A with Nicole Swartz of Sprout Law

As an artist, there’s so much mystery around copyright and trademarking your designs and it can all feel very overwhelming, so today I’m talking to a lawyer who specializes in exactly this. Her name is Nicole Swartz and she’s going to clear up some of the misconceptions out there and answer your questions. I won’t be making a habit of having guests that aren’t stained glass artists but I really am seeing and hearing this topic everywhere lately and so this episode is a TIME OUT, everyone set down your tools, and LISTEN.

In fact, if you only listen to only 1 episode of Cracked, THIS SHOULD BE THE ONE. I also encourage you to forward this episode to any of your maker friends who don’t do glass because 99% of this information is applicable to their work as well.

My wish for each and every one of you is that you never find yourself in a copyright pickle, and after hearing this episode you will have some tools to avoid the headache of a design fight. I actually intended to release this episode much later in the season but after recording it I decided it’s just too valuable to keep to myself, I needed to release it as soon as possible.

So without further ado...

CRACKED EP. 12 Coffee talk with the mini mighty Megan McElfresh from The Stained Glass Association of America

Today in episode 12 I’m joined by Megan McElfresh, she’s a third generation stained glass artist, and the wizard behind the curtain aka the executive director of the Stained Glass Association of America. Building a community and connecting people within this niche glass world is something I’m passionate about and a huge reason for starting this podcast. In Megan I found a kindred spirit in those efforts amongst others.
From her vantage point she sees us all, from the part time hobbyist to the major studios. BTW did you know that all those huge studios need the small makers to keep this industry alive? It’s true, and she’s going to explain to us why! The SGAA also has a very cool history of protecting the stained glass industry here in the states, and I think this falls into the category of things we should really know, so Megan is here to enlighten us on that too.
She’s also an advocate for safety in the studio and I bet something she says today is something that you didn’t think of doing or you didn’t realize you needed and it could change your life! For real. It did mine. I thought I was being pretty careful and turns out there were some easy -  but major - improvements I needed to make in the studio to protect myself better.

Besides being a walking Encyclopedia Britannica Megan is also funny, sweet, and someone I’m now proud to call a friend. Keep listening and you’ll see why…

CRACKED EP. 11 From the land down under to the land of castles with Hannah Gregory of Bad Ass Stained Glass

Ep. 11 - Rarely do we get to witness an artist move through a craft with an eagerness to explore new possibilities with the curiosity we once were taught as children, but most have not carried into adulthood. When we do get to witness this special kind of artist, their work always leads to greatness. Everyone, I'd like you to meet Hannah Gregory. She's known for combining ancient techniques with newer, modern ones and adding her own twist (and yep, sometimes DNA too.) An Australian currently just finishing up her stay as the international artist in resident at the university of Wales, her dedication to thinking and working outside of the box has everyone excitedly anticipating what she'll make next.

Her skill shows in every piece she makes, whether it be one of her own impressive designs or her fan art. An avid fan of The Simpsons she’s creating a collection dedicated to honoring the TV show…but make no mistake, this isn’t your run of the mill chachkie merch. CRACKED EP. 09 Finding the highs in lows with social media maven & newly minted author Kara Bussey of Glimpse Glass

In ep. 09 I'm joined by Kara Bussey of Glimpse Glass. The queen of floral wreaths, botanical moons and wearable stained glass crowns, she's a natural communicator from her decade working in communications. But now she’s now got her focus on communicating “how to” in her new book, stained glass for beginners. She’s also gone viral multiple times with stained glass videos - so we spend a lot of time chatting about what works for engagement in her posts and what doesn’t. But putting yourself out there in any way, whether it's a book, social media post or in my case, a podcast, can bring about anxiety and fear of judgement, and Kara very honestly shares with us her experience with that and where she is now on her journey of figuring it all out.

CRACKED BONUS EP. WHY IS PINK GLASS SO DANG EXPENSIVE?!

Why is pink glass so dang expensive?! Inquiring minds what to know! @janelfooglassworks and I take a stab at it in her episode of Cracked, but luckily Lesley Green of @bespokeglass knew the answers.

Thank you Lesley!

“It's true there is gold in some pinks (usually the warmer ones), but most of the bluer cooler pinks have erbium (not sure how this compares pricewise but many of the raw elements are $$$).  There are no dyes involved in glass colors, the glass is all melted from raw materials in weight proportions just like a recipe; this mix is called 'batch' and generally includes compounds that make up clear glass (silica [sand], soda & lime) + raw materials that add color (copper, tin, cobalt, gold, etc etc etc) + other agents that adjust the stability, melting quality, clarity, COE compatibility, those sorts of things.  So that's true for basically all the glass we use for stained glass, and the toxicity isn't really different between the colors - the most toxic part of the process is when the materials are being mixed and the furnaces are being charged as it's a lot of toxic airborne particles floating around.  Basically dust is the real dangerous part and that's universal regardless of color. There are issues with emissions from the melting of the materials, but that's typically stuff that can be solved with how the factory is built - although this problem has greatly changed our industry in the US because some of our factories were in the middle of now-thriving cities (esp Portland).  That's a whole other story though.  What makes pinks, reds and oranges so expensive though, aside from the materials, is that they burn out way faster than blues & greens - meaning if you melt an entire furnace of a gold-pink glass, you can only use some portion of it before the color burns out, pinks being the shortest of all the colors I believe.  Since these colors are meant to be replicable, when the color starts to burn out and doesn't match the color standard, the glass has to be used for something else,  this is what sometimes called limited runs or uncategorized colors.”

CRACKED EP. 08 It's the Halloween queen and your favorite yoni witch Sarah Fitzpatrick of Witch Way Glass Co.

In preparation for ep. 08 and very special Halloween episode the Instagram poll people have spoken..! So many of you requested her, so today I'm getting chatty with Ontario witch and stained glass artist Sarah Fitzpatrick of Witch Way Glass Co. This self described kitchen witch makes predominately Halloween themed work all year round and it's CRAZY to me that she's only been doing glass for 3 years because her work is so good. Today she's going to share her tips on how to make Etsy work for you and how to get those solder lines super shiny.  We're also going to discuss how to deal with copycats with grace and kindness, and how her popular yoni pieces might make some of us a little uncomfortable at first...but it's all good because we're leaning into that feeling and the happy ending is a pretty sweet spot to be.

“Hey guys!  Just listening to the podcast & can give a little info on the whole pink glass cost issue. It's true there is gold in some pinks (usually the warmer ones), but most of the bluer cooler pinks have erbium (not sure how this compares pricewise but many of the raw elements are $$$).
